I am not a political expert but that seems like strange choice since McCain has built his stance around Obama not having experience. Supposedly this woman is 4-5 years younger than Obama. It's going to be tough for him to go to that card now with this choice.

yeah - i was thinking the same thing after reading a short script. i wonder how is camp is thinking regarding that. still a great idea to tap a woman for VP. imho. and one with a maverick disposition

Lobster, that seems to be the initial "media/pundit" reaction - that her lack of experience, not mention coming into politics from the oil and gas industry, takes the "oomph" out of that charge for McCain. He's an elderly, not particularly healthy candidate who's number 2 has less public service than Obama, while when the snipers take out Barack, you're left with Biden (and his 42 perfect huge white teet). Of course, she's "pro-life" (or "anti-woman/anti-choice/individual freedom" as some might take it) and that should siphon off some female voters. Then again, I'm not sure how many male folk down home in Dixie are going to necessarily want a woman as No. 2. Love, honor and OBEY. Heel, bitch. Tree that (ra)coon.

Favorite "pundit" line last night was the Reverend (ha!) Jesse Jackson talking about the new dance craze, the Obamarama and he started to give a little shake.

That's another good point. Like Dire says we better start to learn more about her because she is going to be the # 2 to a guy who's pushing 80 with a history of cancer.

The DNC will immediately put out pictures of her with Senator Ted Stevens. Whether or not she's really a "reformer" (as if that word means anything), expect to see her image next to that of his and Abramoff, etc.

But I don't think they can make that stuff stick BD. Except for her recent family soap opera there aren't any ethics ties to her. THAT is how she won to begin with, by going against normal party lines. And now the ultra right wingers and pundits hate her for it.

Which then gives McCain the chance to focus people back on his "maverick" reputation and how he is a "reformer" - which makes me understand the pick better. Still seems a bit crazy to me (but I'm not allowed to criticize McCain because he spent time in the Hanoi Hilton and thus any criticism is off limits as unpatriotic; just ask Sean Hannity and "commenator" Karl Rove.)

WOW! We're on the map.

What do I think? I like her. You see we had old school cronyism and big oil suckups and smugness up here for so long. She actually quit her post because of ethics. She's talked against people in her own party, including Ted Stevens. You have to understand that up here Ted Stevens is a God to most people. Saying anything against him is like political suicide. So call me naive but I actually think she cares about Alaskans first. I truly believe that. Plus she's normal, she's from where I live, Wasilla. We've seen her shopping at Walmart just like us.

Having said all this - WOW! McCain has just flushed the whole no experience arguement down the toilet. She is not a great public speaker and if anyone thinks Obama can't do it wait till you hear her. Serious. Biden will shred her in a debate. No question about it. He's going to make her look like the cheeleader she was in High School.I can not imagine her stepping in to lead the Country. No way. Also, she's wrapped up in a little ethics scandle right now. Not as bad as what's been going down up here with sending a bunch of legislatures to jail for taking bribes ( all Republicans of course, imagine that. The party of "morals" )

I'm not ashamed to say that as allways I'll be voting against the Republicans. Neither side is going to do what it takes but it's been proven time and time again that for my family to get ANY benefit from Govt. descions ( education, healthcare, whatever )it's never come from Republicans. But I also have to say for the first time in my life I'm not completely horrified of the Republican ticket. For ONCE it's not a completely old school extremist corporate whore " family values" bunch of crap.

JOTS, do you want to edit your post to make sure folks don't know you shop at Walmart? I'm not sure that will fly at the "kindest" place on the internet.

When I moved in with some "kind deadheads" in a house in the Santa Cruz hills back in '86 (Lompico for those that might know the area), the first time back from the grocery store I pulled out a loaf of bread and got a huge lecture about how it wasn't good bread, full of chemicals, etc. I then asked how much for the organic loaf in which the dough had been hand kneaded by hairy underarmed women liberationists. I then pointed out my loaf cost 1/4th of that. Then again, they also got pissed when I'd make a steak on Sunday and they had to "smell the murder".

Sorry for the tangent. Well, not really sorry...

Hey BD, you sound like one of those types that were inside enjoying the Grateful Dead instead of hanging out in the parking lot hugging kind veggie burritos. You are disqualified from being a Deadhead you capitalist meat eating scumbag!

was I the 1 in 10,000?

Yea, my friends and I loved the band and the vibe but definitely enjoyed taking the piss out of the more righteous than thou out in the lot. Then again, post show we always cranked anything OTHER than the dead - usually some type of funk type dance music or shit like "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts". My favorite time "vending" was selling black t-shirts with the pocket ("wear the shirt Jer wears"; and sure as shit that night he wore some guatemalan type shirt - someone must have been amused).

I actually don't shop there that much and I truly hate what that place doesn't do for this Country. BUT I have four kids and to quote the Godfather I don't make any apologies for doing what I have to do to take care of my family. When it's time to buy school supplies for four kids- it's Walmart. Other houshold items, sometimes it's Walmart. What's boycotting them going to do besides having me pay considerably more on some items elsewhere?

If McCain is elected, you will rarely, if ever, see her again. Partner for change my ass. She is purely there to help the old man appeal to women voters. As well as to hard up forumites (as detailed above...and now below as well).

"If McCain is elected"...that might only happen if she gets nailed for troopergate, babygate or one of her other gates and he selects a credible running mate.

she might be a fine human being but a qualified vp candidate she is NOT!!! If she is, this country has gone farther down the tubes than I first thought...

with this wonderful technology we can do our own vetting and after spending the afternoon with her I have major doubts that she was even vetted by anyone. Spend a few hours reading her past speeches and interviews; it is really enlightening. Kind of scary, but enlightening...

(In her first big speech she mentions nixing the bridge to nowhere; unfortunately that was after she was the project's major proponent and only backed off when federal funds went dry.)

It seems that mccain wanted either his buddy from NJ or PA and when his advisers nixed them and presented him with real options (i.e., options to win the evangelical vote) he did his "maverick" thing and went with palin.

anyway, it should make for an interesting election...just hope there are not any invasions or other fun for an october surprise since this country has had enough fun for a time...

really? a woman that opposes abortion even in cases of rape and incest is going to carry those voters just because she shares the same gender as Hilary? Who wants creationism taught in schools? [which doesn't really upset pastafarians such as myself - so long as our value system is taught as well; we know evolution is just a theory - as is gravity]
